The 2024 Olympic games are underway and Team USA women's basketball is off to an undefeated start. Stars do not always play well when joining forces, but this team is taking care of business so far. Notably, Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty superstars A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart have looked especially impressive as teammates.
The consistent MVP contenders combined for 49 points in Team USA's 87-74 victory over Belgium on Thursday. The USA utilized a team effort throughout the contest, but it quickly became evident that Wilson and Stewart were leading the way. So why is it surprising that Wilson and Stewart are finding so much success together?
How A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart are finding success as teammates
Wilson and Stewart have battled against one another for years. They have played against each other in multiple big games, including the 2023 WNBA Finals. Their offensive attacks are fairly similar in some areas, as both Wilson and Stewart excel at driving to the basket. They are both more than capable of making an impact on the offensive glass.
Wilson does not shoot the three-ball on a consistent basis. Stewart, meanwhile, has averaged just under five three-point attempts per outing for her career. Wilson and Stewart have found a way to use their offensive similarities and differences to benefit one another.
It is not all about offense, however. The Liberty and Aces stars have played well on the defensive end of the floor. Wilson's defensive effort has stood out, which is not surprising given her two career Defensive Player of the Year awards.
A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart's developing chemistry as teammates will be forgotten if they fall short of winning a gold medal at the Olympics. Anything short of winning gold will be regarded as a failure for Team USA. With that being said, the team is currently in a tremendous position.
Every opponent will give Team USA everything they have, though.
