The Indiana Fever cruised to a 100-81 victory over the Chicago Sky on Friday night. Chicago was playing without Chennedy Carter, so they were not at full strength. Nevertheless, it became clear throughout the game that Indiana is the better team. Catlin Clark may have clinched the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award during the contest as well.
Many fans on social media are claiming that Clark will unquestionably win the award following Friday's game. The Fever rookie recorded a 31-point, 12-assist double-double. The fact that her performance came against Angel Reese, who is her greatest challenger in the Rookie of the Year conversation, only makes Clark's game more impressive.
Reese had a double-double as well, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort. She did not play her best game by any means, though. Still, Reese's double-double has to count for something, right?
Well, Robert Griffin III took to Twitter (formerly X) to share his thoughts on the situation. The former NFL quarterback issued a fiery rant, explaining why he believes race politics have impacted the WNBA Rookie of the Year debate.
Robert Griffin III's rant
Griffin did not hold back after Friday's Wings-Fever game. He made it clear that Clark should win the award. Additionally, Griffin wants the focus to remain purely on the "results" on the basketball court as opposed to "race."
"Caitlin Clark just won the WNBA Rookie of the Year award after tonight’s performance," Griffin wrote. "Until tonight, the debate boiled down to whether you value rebounds and double doubles or points and assists more because Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese play DIFFERENT POSITIONS and are both balling.
"But I will say the quiet part out loud. Too many people are making their public stance on who they think is the WNBA rookie of the year based on race and not the results. Many privately feel differently, but publicly take a different stance to avoid being called out by the people who look like them. When did sports become politics where we deny the truth just to support the party we want to win? That’s sad. We should never let the color of someone’s skin determine or drive our opinion or interpretation of the facts."
Griffin then compared Clark and Reese's statistics. He later admitted that Reese is a "special player", but added that Clark has "earned the award." Griffin ended his rant by urging people to "stop denying the truth."
The WNBA Rookie of the Year race
Caitlin Clark will probably win the award. She has enjoyed a fantastic season. In fact, Clark may even end up earning MVP consideration.
As Griffin wrote, Reese is undeniably a "special player." Her future is extremely bright and she would be the Rookie of the Year frontrunner in most other seasons. Barring a big surprise, though, Clark is in the driver's seat for the award following her elite effort on Friday evening.
