The Phoenix Mercury previously agreed to a seven-day contract with forward Monique Billings. Billings has impressed in her three games with Phoenix so far and the Mercury have taken notice. As a result, the team announced that they agreed to sign Billings to a rest-of-season contract on Sunday.
Billings has averaged 9.0 points per game during her time with the Mercury so far. She had previously signed a hardship contract with the Dallas Wings, as she spent 24 games in Dallas during the 2024 season. Once the Wings started to get healthy, though, the Wings ultimately released the veteran forward.
With that being said, the Wings were impressed with Billings. She played well in Dallas, which led to other teams taking notice as well. The Mercury ended up signing her and she is now set to finish the season in Phoenix.
Billings has played in the WNBA since 2018. She had previously played her entire career with the Atlanta Dream before the 2024 campaign. At only 28 years old, Billings has plenty left to offer. Perhaps she will land an even more secure contract during the offseason.
The Mercury most recently defeated the Dream on Friday. Phoenix is now 16-14 in 2024. The Mercury will have a challenge on Monday, however, as they prepare to play against the best team in the WNBA, the New York Liberty.
Tip-off is scheduled for 10 PM EST in what projects to be an exciting clash. Billings and the Mercury will look to upset the Liberty at home.
