The Pittsburgh women's basketball team defeated SMU on Sunday in both shocking and historic fashion. At one point in the game, SMU led by 32 points. The game seemed to be all but over given the lead, but Pitt kept fighting. In the second half, Pitt utilized a 54-10 advantage to complete the comeback, ultimately winning the game by a final score of 72-59.
According to the ACC Network, it was the largest comeback in women's basketball history. Pittsburgh is now 9-9 overall, while SMU fell to 10-7 with the loss.
Pitt women's basketball completes a historic comeback
At one point in the game, SMU led 46-14. SMU held a 49-18 lead at the half. SMU was in complete control, but something changed at the half.
Pitt went on to absolutely dominate the third quarter. Not only did they score 28 points, but Pittsburgh held SMU scoreless in the quarter. That's right, SMU did not score a single point in the third quarter.
SMU was able to manage 10 points in the fourth, but Pitt scored 26 en route to the shocking 72-59 victory. It was a memorable effort to say the least.
Mikayla Johnson led the way with 22 points. Khadija Faye added 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Marley Washenitz finished the game with 14 points. Nya Robertson tried to help SMU avoid the historic defeat with 23 points, but they ultimately dropped the game.
What's next for Pitt?
In a year that has seen records broken all around the nation, Pittsburgh is surely feeling confident following Sunday's big win. It has been a fairly mediocre season overall for the team, but perhaps they are on the verge of seizing momentum and ending the year strong.
Pitt is scheduled to play No. 21 NC State in their next contest on Thursday. That game will represent a challenge to say the least. Pitt will then battle No. 19 UNC next Sunday.
Pulling off upsets against both teams is going to be difficult without question. The historic victory against SMU may be the momentum boost Pittsburgh needs, however.
For now, Pitt women's basketball will celebrate Sunday's impressive win.
