The Washington Mystics defeated the Chicago Sky 103-86 on Tuesday. Sonia Citron led Washington with 28 points in the win. She joined Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers as the only other rookie with multiple 25-plus point games in 2025, according to StatMuse. Bueckers, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, has had a great season. Citron has also played well, however.
The Mystics' 21-year-old guard is averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from beyond the arc. She was selected to the WNBA All-Star team amid her strong rookie campaign. There is legitimate reason to believe that Citron can become one of the better scorers in the WNBA moving forward.
Her true shooting percentage currently sits at 59.7 percent. She is almost automatic from the corner, connecting on 44.4 percent of her corner three-point attempts.
Citron has always displayed signs of becoming an elite scorer. In college at Notre Dame, the guard shot 46.8 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from deep. The Mystics clearly believed in her potential, and now Citron is receiving the opportunity to play a significant role in Washington's offense.
How Sonia Citron will improve
Citron has enjoyed an impressive rookie season. At just 21 years old, there is still room for improvement. Some of that will be on Citron, while the other part of the equation will be on the Mystics.
Brittney Sykes leads Washington with 4.5 assists per outing. Sug Sutton is second on the team with 3.1 assists per game. No one else on the roster is averaging more than three assists per contest. Adding another play-maker or two could lead to more open looks for Citron.
As for Citron, she would benefit from being even more aggressive with her shot. She currently averages 10.4 field goal and 4.2 three-point attempts per game. Although those are both fairly respectable marks, one has to imagine that Washington wouldn't mind her taking a few more shots per outing given her efficiency.
Citron's ability to score at an elite level on any given night is something that also stands out. The fact that Bueckers and Citron are the only rookies with multiple 25-plus point games is telling of both of their scoring ceilings. Bueckers may end up winning the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award, but Citron is also establishing herself as a star.
