The Washington Mystics earned a 90-85 win against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. The game saw a surprising ejection occur, however. Shakira Austin and Marina Mabrey exchanged words in a heated moment early in the game, leading to a technical foul for both players. Later in the game, Austin was assessed her second technical foul in bizarre fashion.

According to Dean Koutouratsas of Yahoo Sports, Austin yelled something from the bench and was ultimately assessed the second technical foul. As a result, she was ejected from the game. It isn't too often that a player gets ejected while not even being on the floor.

The Mystics were still able to emerge victorious, however.

Washington could be a playoff contender in 2025. Austin, a 24-year-old, will play a significant role on this team. She has played at the WNBA level since 2022, displaying improvement along the way.

Shakira Austin's impact on Mystics

In 2024, Austin recorded a career-high 11.8 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals per outing. It is worth mentioning that she only played in 12 total games a season ago, though. Still, she displayed growth in her game, which is why the Mystics are surely excited about her potential in 2025.

Austin is capable of playing center or power forward at 6'5", bringing an important element of versatility. In 2022, Austin finished second in WNBA Rookie of the Year voting.

Washington still found a way to win despite Austin's ejection on Sunday. The Mystics are off to a strong start to begin the '25 campaign, as they now hold a 2-0 record. As mentioned, this Washington team could make things quite interesting in 2025.

Mystics trying to remain perfect in 2025

The Mystics will attempt to remain perfect moving forward. With that said, they have three consecutive road games awaiting them. Their next matchup is against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday. Washington will then have an especially challenging clash against the Las Vegas Aces on Friday. The team will conclude their road trip in a Sunday night affair against the Mercury in Phoenix.

It will be a difficult stretch to say the least. However, the Mystics are playing with confidence at the moment. Shakira Austin will look to avoid receiving another ejection as she hopes to make a positive impact on her team. While on the floor, Austin is a difference-maker for Washington.
