Winning one championship in the WNBA is impressive. Earning two consecutive WNBA Finals victories is memorable, which is something the Las Vegas Aces accomplished in 2022 and 2023. However, winning three championships in a row instantly turns a team into a dynasty. Will the New York Liberty build the next unstoppable dynasty in the WNBA?
The Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in the 2024 WNBA Finals. New York also defeated Las Vegas in the semifinals, ending the Aces' chances of winning three consecutive championships. Although the Liberty have only earned one WNBA Finals victory as of this story's publication, their future outlook is bright.
The Liberty's long-term outlook
See, every good team often builds around a core of star players. For the Liberty, that core consists of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. All three players are reliable stars who can lead the team on any given night. However, good teams also develop a foundation of quality depth.
The Liberty have added players such as Natasha Cloud and Marine Johannes this offseason. Meanwhile, Nyara Sabally, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Leonie Fiebich are set to play impactful roles once again.
In other words, the Liberty have developed an all-around core of both superstars and role players. The players on the roster have chemistry with each other, which is arguably the most important element of winning in any league. There have been many attempts at building super-teams in sports, but those attempts do not always go according to plan. Why do they fail? Sometimes there are other reasons, but many times it is simply a matter of the players not having chemistry with one another.
The Liberty's foundation is in place, setting the stage for a dynasty to come to fruition.
Liberty's challengers
There are a number of teams ready to challenge the Liberty. New York's path back to the WNBA Finals will have obstacles. With that being said, the Liberty's roster has what it takes to take care of business and win a second consecutive championship in 2025. If they do indeed accomplish that goal, perhaps New York will end up being able to repeat the feat yet again in 2026, ultimately cementing the dynasty.
The Liberty are currently focused on preparing for the 2025 season. They are not thinking about the '25 WNBA Finals or 2026 season yet. In the back of the players' and coaches' minds, though, one has to imagine they understand that there is potential for a dynasty to emerge.
