The Los Angeles Sparks held an introductory press conference for their new star guard Kelsey Plum on Wednesday. Los Angeles acquired Plum via a trade with the Las Vegas Aces during the offseason. However, Plum admitted she was hesitant before leaving the Aces to join the Sparks, via Alexa Philippou of ESPN.
Philippou wrote that Plum initially was not sure if the "Sparks would provide a high-quality player experience." However, Los Angeles ultimately impressed the former Aces guard.
"Despite that initial hesitation, every step of the way, they have not just met but exceeded my expectations, and I've been treated better than I've ever been as a WNBA player," Plum said during her introductory press conference.
The Aces do a tremendous job of providing players with a high-quality experience. Plum wanted to make sure the Aces would offer similar treatment, and it seemingly became clear to her that the Sparks could indeed meet her expectations.
A previous report suggested that Plum is open to staying with the Sparks for the long-term future. Perhaps Plum will end up signing a contract extension with her new team at some point down the road.
Kelsey Plum looking to lead Los Angeles Sparks
The Sparks finished the 2024 campaign with the worst record in the league. It was a forgettable season for the team to say the least. The Sparks have hope for the future, though.
In addition to acquiring Plum, Cameron Brink is set to return from injury. The forward was selected second overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft and she has a bright future in the WNBA. Additionally, Dearica Hamby is still on the roster, and she is one of the better players in the league.
The Sparks have the second overall pick for the upcoming 2025 WNBA Draft as well. Although they would have loved to have earned the first overall pick, LA should still be able to draft a potential star at second overall.
Sure, the team likely won't compete for a championship in 2025. Still, Los Angeles will have a legitimate opportunity to take a big step in the right direction. It probably will not be long before the Sparks emerge as a true contender.
Kelsey Plum certainly knows what it takes to win, having played a significant role in the Aces' 2022 and 2023 back-to-back championships. Despite having initial hesitations, she is now ready to lead the Sparks.
