Given the sheer star-power and talent that Flau'jae Johnson possesses, many questioned Duke head coach Kara Lawson's decision to limit the LSU forward's minutes during the USA's recent AmeriCup venture. Lawson opted to unleash Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes instead—and given the pair's recent performances in the NCAA, this was absolutely the correct decision.

LSU and Vanderbilt locked horns in an SEC showdown that did not disappoint. Despite this being a vital fixture in the calendars for both colleges, most eyes were fixated on Blakes and Johnson as they aimed to prove they are the superior option. Vanderbilt's sophomore left no stone unturned as she inspired her team to a 65-61 victory.

Blakes recorded 32 points, four assists, and three steals in a relentless performance that left spectators gasping for air. Her aggressive intent when attacking the rim proved unstoppable. If she wasn't draining a shot, the nifty guard was forcing her defender into contact and drawing fouls.

In comparison, Johnson had an uncharacteristically quiet night by her own usual impressive standards. The senior failed to put any points on the scoreboard, missing all four of her field goal attempts. Defensively, Johnson also struggled to have an impact—something that Blakes took full advantage of.

When referencing Blakes' sensational offensive performance, this is far from an anomaly and there are many other great performances on the horizon.

Consistency has been key for Blakes

In the eyes of Kara Lawson, this matchup may have been some form of moral victory; however, it is more likely that both the coach and Blakes will be more interested in the regularity of the players' performances this season.

The 20-year-old has established herself as an effective two-way talent who can heavily contribute to a winning program. Blakes is averaging 25.2 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.7 steals per game. Not only this, but the sophomore has recorded 25+ points on eight occasions—with a season-high 35 points coming in victories against Oregon State and Arkansas.

Additionally, Blakes' ability to establish a telepathic partnership with fellow guard Aubrey Galvan has been a prominent factor in Vanderbilt remaining unbeaten so far this campaign (15-0) and propelling them to the summit of the SEC.

Of course, the most important aspect of college basketball is player development and providing athletes with the greatest opportunity possible to succeed in the professional game, whether that be the WNBA or in Europe. Nevertheless, Kara Lawson should feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that Mikayla Blakes is justifying her decision to restrict Flau'jae Johnson's role during the AmeriCup 2025.
