The Chicago Sky's new dawn was always meant to belong to Kamilla Cardoso. A historic career-high night against the Portland Fire proved that the Brazilian center can be unstoppable when she is motivated and ready for battle. While Cardoso may possess the attributes to become Chicago's main scoring outlet, can she discover a level of consistency to reach her true potential?
Discussions around Cardoso's ability to spearhead the Sky's offense have never really centered around her talent level, more so her consistency and motivation. Fans have seen glimpses of the dominant South Carolina big who came out of college as one of the most exciting prospects of the 2024 draft class -- but they have yet to see these performances over a prolonged period of time.
During the Sky's 124-94 victory over the Portland Fire, Cardoso was like a woman possessed. She hustled for loose balls, fought to win back possession, and simply could not miss a shot. In just 24 minutes on the floor, Cardoso scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while draining all 13 of her shots from the floor -- surpassing Nneka Ogwumike as the player with the most field goals in a game without missing in WNBA history.

After returning from a lengthy injury layoff and speaking in the Sky's postgame press conference, Courtney Vandersloot alluded to Chicago's need for Cardoso to maintain this level of performance. "She [Cardoso} has the capability to do that. We are gonna ride this wave and keep expecting this from her."
Can Kamilla Cardoso make this a nightly occurrence?
One thing that separates good players from historic ones is consistency. A'ja Wilson doesn't devastate one team; she devastates them all. To do this on a nightly basis, a player must be prepared mentally and physically for whatever their opponent is going to throw at them.
Kamilla Cardoso can be this player -- if she wants to be. Her skillset does not rely on finding her rhythm from deep early; all she needs is to get set in the paint and for her teammates to get the ball in her hands. Yes, this is probably oversimplifying the process of switching and transitional offense, but the Brazilian has proven that if she can get to her spot, then few defenders can stop her.
On some nights, the Sky is not feeding Cardoso the ball enough in the right areas. On other nights, match officials are making some very questionable foul calls on Chicago's star center. However, in my opinion, her biggest limitation is her drive to be great. During several matchups this season, Cardoso has cut a disinterested figure and does not seem like she is prepared to get into a physical battle.
For a player of her calibre, this can't be the case if the Chicago Sky wants to progress as a franchise. There is no denying the talent levels Kamilla Cardoso has at her disposal, but how much does she truly want to be great? She is more than capable of coasting through her career and carving out an impressive resume. But if Cardoso wants more than that, if she wants to etch her name in the WNBA history books, she must find the drive to become consistently dominant.
