The Indiana Fever forced a third game in their first-round series against the Las Vegas Aces, and they did it by mostly playing exactly the kind of basketball that fans want to see. The Fever pushed the tempo, hit their buckets, shut down their opponents, and pulled off a win even after Caitlin Clark fouled out. Multiple players put up big number, Raven Johnson got a basket over the outstretched arm of A'ja Wilson, and the Fever ended the night with a clear 99-89 win.
Despite leaving the game two minutes before it was finished, Clark came away. with 27 points, 15 assists, and 7 rebounds — and earned a 14-point, 11-assist double double in the game's first half. Kelsey Mitchell added on another 26 points, and Aliyah Boston had 22 points of her own.
But perhaps even more importantly, the Fever did a lot of things they're known for and they did them well. The game, especially the first half, was electric and fast. Clark hit her threes and the Fever owned the paint. The Aces were clearly thrown off their game at first, though the team adjusted to the tempo quickly and went head to head with Indiana for most of the match.
In fact, that paint presence is what firmly pushed the game over into Indiana's win column. The Aces appeared to have no answer for what Indiana was cooking, and the Fever performed with a consistency that offered a glimpse into what they might be in another season or two: a dominant and quick team with an almost intuitive understanding of who they are, how they play, and where each member of the roster is on the court.
Mitchell and Clark offered an especially tight look at what works well when they're in sync. Clark's pairing with Boston has been oft celebrated since she joined the team in 2024, but this season she and Mitchell have offered an offensive masterclass to much of the league. The Fever's paint dominance led to plenty of offensive rebounds, which kept them in the game – Indiana outpaced Las Vegas 11 to 7 in terms of offensive boards.
The teams will next travel back to Las Vegas for what will be the third and final game in the series. The Aces will be back home, and will likely take full advantage of that fact. No matter what happens, tonight's game offered everyone a look at what the Fever can be when they're on point, and it gave the team something to build on for the future.
