Fans pile on Sky coach for telling Angel Reese she can't rest during Lynx game

This isn't a good look at all

Angel Reese didn't play her best game of basketball against the Lynx Tuesday night (though she still added another double-double to her name with 11 points and 11 rebounds), and the Sky themselves didn't perform well (after an early lead, the team lost 91-68). But based on some fan reports, the real problem of the night was coach Tyler Marsh, who reportedly didn't give Reese the opportunity to rest — even when she asked for it.

Fans have expressed a lot of frustration and even anger directed at Marsh in response to several tweets from people who claimed to have been present at the game and who noted Reese repeatedly asked to be taken out. Those calls went unheeded by her coach, who also apparently ignored her request for a timeout.

It's unclear what exactly might have contributed to Reese's requests. She suffered a leg injury and sat out during the Sky's game against the Dream before the All-Star break, but participated in the All-Star Game last weekend. After a rocky start at the beginning of the season, Reese has become one of the strongest frontcourt players in the league, a reality that makes her performance last night all the more confusing and concerning.

Sky fans are questioning Tyler Marsh's decision-making

Fans stared picking up the story after @moooopal wrote on X that Reese "asked to be sat multiple times and tyler refused." They also said, "If thats true than he needs to be gone, you see your player tired and making mistakes in game BENCH HER let her breathe pls."

The tweet was quickly picked up by irate and impassioned fans. One person wrote, "you got my girl begging to be sat and you still refuse. tyler marsh youre going to hell."

This isn't the first time Marsh's abilities as a coach have been called into question. Marsh joined the team after spending the 2022-2024 seasons with the Las Vegas Aces as an assistant coach (and 2020-2022 with the Indiana Fever). In addition to working as an assistant coach, Marsh was also head of player development with the Aces.

News of Marsh's hiring was met with mixed feelings. Many Sky fans were dismayed to learn the team had fired Teresa Weatherspoon after the end of the 2024 season, especially since she and Reese seemed to form a tight bond, and the Sky are expected to build around Reese as the team's franchise player.

Reese described herself as "heartbroken" when she learned the news about Weatherspoon, an indication that she and the front office may not be aligned — and that's something that might continue to spell trouble for Chicago as the 2025 season continues.
