Will the Lady Vols ultimately put a blemish on the Huskies' flawless season?

The UConn Huskies are one of three teams still undefeated in women's college basketball (the other two are Texas Tech and Vanderbilt), and the odds are heavily stacked in the Huskies' favor that they'll maintain that status the rest of the season. In fact, there's not a lot of heavy competition coming up for the team in the weeks to come, save for a February 1 match that may reignite a decades-only rivalry with the Lady Vols.

UConn and Tennessee will meet in Storrs, a game that will play on the heavily storied history between the two schools. Coach Geno Auriemma and the late Pat Summitt often went head-to-head and traded championship years.

Tennessee and UConn began playing one another in 1995, and the rivalry between the two teams was one of the first to break out of the women's college basketball bubble and into mainstream sports news. Summitt had the most wins of a male or female coach in NCAA Division 1 basketball and ultimately won eight NCAA Championships before her retirement; Auriemma has won 12 of his own (four of which were won against the Lady Vols). The teams have traded wins and losses over the years (the Huskies won in 1995 and 1996, then the Lady Vols for the next three years).

UConn is undefeated because the team is very, very good

It's no secret that the Huskies are wildly talented this season, just as the team is often one of the best in the NCAA. Auriemma attracts strong athletes who are disciplined and who commit fully to his system, which makes for a formidable squad that can meet and destroy anyone in their path.

UConn is also undefeated because their conference schedule isn't strong

It's not quite fair to credit UConn's success entirely with the heavy talent that makes up the team. The fact of the matter is both their non-conference and conference schedule isn't exactly the toughest, a reality that makes the success of a school like Vanderbilt, which plays in the SEC, all the more impressive. But despite the relative ease with which the Huskies tend to sail through the regular season, they have proven year after year that they have what it takes to beat anyone from any conference.

Having said that, the Huskies did put together a pretty intense non-conference schedule that they also coasted through with few problems. The team met — and beat — Louisville, Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan, Utah, USC, and Iowa before the regular season began (those matches resulted in 79-66, 99-67, 72-69, 93-41, 79-51, and 90-64 wins, respectively).
