Elena Delle Donne is officially retiring after 10 seasons in the WNBA.

The 7-time WNBA All-Star and two-time league MVP announced her decision on social media. "One of my favorite children’s books asked, 'How did it get so late so soon?'. I have asked myself that over and over again in the process of coming to the decision to retire from playing basketball. Being able to say that out loud was one of the hardest parts of my career," Delle Donne began.

"My body seemed to make this decision before my mind accepted it but I now truly know this is the right thing for me at the right time," she continued. "Words cannot adequately express how thankful I am to my family, all of my incredible teammates, friends, executives, sponsors, staff and most importantly the amazing fans that have accompanied me on this journey. This game has been my life and I am grateful for the memories and how much it’s given me. It feels good to close this chapter knowing I gave it my all and I can’t wait for what’s next!"

Elena Delle Donne's basketball career isn't completely over

Though she's ending her playing career, Delle Donne isn't totally departing the league. She will move into a position as a basketball adviser of Monumental Basketball, which owns the Washington Mystics and the Washington Wizards.

Delle Donne's retirement is the culmination of a career that began when she was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. She was named the Rookie of the Year in 2013 and was named WNBA MVP three seasons later in 2016. The Mystics won the championship with Delle Donne in 2019 and she was named WNBA MVP the same season.

In a 2018 interview with the Guardian, Delle Donne spoke about her decision to leave the Sky for the Mystics. She credited her "incredible" teammates for making the transition easier, and the fact that she was older and more ready to find a city where she could build a life.

Delle Donne also said her wife Amanda has played a major role in keeping her focused on and off the court over the years. Amanda began sharing pieces of their home life on social media, something fans have appreciated and enjoyed over the years.

Delle Donne ends her career with an average of 19.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists — and a lifetime of memories to cherish. Her next steps will be a gift to witness, just as her years as an athlete on the court have been.
