The Phoenix Mercury have signed DeWanna Bonner, bringing the 2-time WNBA champion back home to the team where she began her career in 2009. Bonner's signing also comes with news that the Mercury waived forward Murjanatu Musa.

The news ends two weeks of speculation about where Bonner would end up and when she would sign with a new team. Bonner last played for the Indiana Fever on June 10; she missed the following five games due to "personal reasons" and was waived by the team on June 25 after the Fever failed to find a suitable trade. At the time, Bonner's camp requested she not be signed by another team off waivers, and Bonner made it clear she wanted to sign with the Mercury or the Atlanta Dream.

"We couldn’t be more excited to have DeWanna back in a Mercury uniform," said Mercury GM Nick U’Ren. "She is a true winner, leader and one of the most talented and versatile players in our game. Her high basketball IQ, shooting range, athleticism and ability to play and defend multiple positions is going to be a great addition to what are we building here in Phoenix."

DeWanna Bonner has a long history in Phoenix

Bonner was drafted to the Mercury as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, and played for the team for the first 10 years of her professional career. Bonner is a 6-time WNBA All Star (2015, 2018-19, 2021, 2023-24) and three-time Sixth Player of the Year (2009-11). She is also the third highest all-time leading scorer in the league, a feat she accomplished earlier this season while playing for the Fever.

Bonner's Mercury-specific accolades are also impressive: she ranks second in Mercury history in games played, minutes played, steals and double-doubles and third in points, rebounds, assists and blocks.

The Mercury face the Minnesota Lynx Wednesday

Phoenix will next play the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday, July 9, at home, giving Bonner her first official welcome back party on the team's court. Bonner was in attendance at Monday night's game, which saw a powerhouse performance from her partner, Alyssa Thomas.

Thomas, who was named to the 2025 All Star reserve list this year, racked up her 16th career triple-double with and her first for the Mercury last night. She came into the 2025 season as the league's leader in triple-doubles and is currently averaging 14.4 points, 9.8 assists, and 7.5 rebounds in 30 minutes of play so far this season.
