Lacking reliable depth is not usually an issue Dawn Staley has to deal with. And yet, that very problem defined much of South Carolina’s 2025-26 season up to this point. With Chloe Kitts out for the season and many new faces on the roster, Staley had to change her lineups and rotations and struggled to find reserves she could trust to relieve some of her five starters.

As a result, starters Joyce Edwards, Tessa Johnson, Ta’Niya Latson, Raven Johnson, and Madina Okot have to play heavy minutes. When Latson suffered an ankle injury that has kept her out for two games already, Staley finally discovered an answer to her problem: freshman guard Agot Makeer. Even when Latson is back, Makeer should continue to see significant minutes.

“We’ve been playing our starters for 30 plus minutes,” Staley said during practice. “So, we’d like to knock that number down a lot if we can. [Agot Makeer] has actually proven that she should be playing more minutes.”

Adjusting to college basketball can take some time

Agot Makeer is one of three freshmen on South Carolina’s roster now that Alicia Tournebize is officially with the team. Making the jump to college basketball isn’t easy, especially when you join a program with South Carolina’s reputation. Playing for Dawn Staley immediately comes with the expectation that you can impact winning basketball simply because the Gamecocks have won so much in recent years.

South Carolina didn’t play the most competitive schedule to start the season and won most of its games by a significant margin, including victories over USC and Duke. That allowed Staley to give her reserves important minutes. Makeer regularly played over 15 minutes and even recorded a double-double against Providence. However, she also lost a few important opportunities to develop when she had to sit out with a concussion. That undoubtedly slowed down her process a bit.

The one time, Staley didn’t feel comfortable having Makeer on the court was in a close game against Texas. Makeer only played three minutes.

With conference play in full swing, South Carolina will face tougher opponents than earlier in the season. The Gamecocks have games against Texas, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, and Kentucky coming up. Texas and Oklahoma are currently ranked second and fifth. Vanderbilt and Kentucky are seventh and sixth, respectively. With a tougher schedule, Staley needs to know that her reserves and role players can get onto the court and help the team win against really good opponents.

Staley seems to trust that Makeer can do that now. She played over 20 minutes in three straight games and put together solid performances despite some shooting struggles against the Florida Gators.

Maddy McDaniels’s and Ayla McDowell’s performances off the bench will also be important to South Carolina’s success.
