The WNBA is filled with young stars, but none of them shine brighter than Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers. So, it’s in the league’s best interest to have all three compete at the highest level and battle each other for playoff success and championships.
Clark joined a Fever team that already had Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston and was able to go to the playoffs as a rookie. Reese and Bueckers came into very different situations when they joined losing teams with plenty of issues to iron out. Things changed dramatically for Reese when the Sky traded her to Atlanta, granting her wish of playing for a winning team and fueling a growing Fever-Dream rivalry.
The Wings followed that move with a bunch of breaking news of their own and gave the WNBA the last piece of the Clark-Reese-Bueckers puzzle: a competitive team around the former UConn star.
The Wings went all-in in free agency
Free agency isn’t over yet, but it’s difficult to consider the Wings as anything other than a massive winner of an unprecedented free agency period.
They completely decimated the Lynx’s frontcourt, signing DPOY Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard. They also added Odyssey Sims, who was phenomenal for the Fever last season, and championship veteran Alysha Clark. They also re-signed Arike Ogunbowale, drafted Azzi Fudd, and are bringing back Awak Kuier, who is a finalist for the EuroLeague DPOY award.
The team will have to build chemistry and fine-tune the Bueckers-Ogwunbowale fit after the latter missed a bunch of time last season, but the Wings look ready to make a push for the playoffs.
Reese, Clark, and Bueckers in the playoffs would pay off big for the W
The Fever, Dream, and Wings all have a great chance of making the playoffs. Indiana almost went to the finals last season while Clark was sidelined with an injury, and the Dream looked like a contender until the Fever upset them in the first round. Both teams are even deeper and better now.
All three of Reese, Clark, and Bueckers making the playoffs would undoubtedly drive up ticket sales and viewership numbers for the postseason—especially if the Fever end up facing either the Dream or the Wings at one point. A Fever-Dream rematch would be thrilling either way given how the last one ended, but it only gets spicier with Reese in the mix. Fans also want to see Clark and Bueckers, two of the best young guards in the league, face off at the highest level.
