The Chicago Sky have done it again. Out of nowhere, the franchise’s future has been plunged into controversy with the shocking news that Angel Reese has been traded to the Atlanta Dream, according to Taylor Rooks. There are so many questions to be answered. Who initiated the trade? Which party will be considered the 'winners' of the deal? How will Reese fare with her new franchise? However, in the midst of confusion, one thing is for certain: the Sky are going all-in on Kamilla Cardoso.

Sources tell me the Atlanta Dream and the Chicago Sky have agreed to a trade.
Wow. While we take a breather from this rollercoaster of emotions, the details of this blockbuster trade have emerged. Front Office Sports women's sports reporter Annie Costabile has stated that Chicago will get Atlanta's first-round draft picks for 2027 and 2028. In return, the Dream will acquire Angel Reese and will have the right to swap second-round picks with the Sky in 2028.

Of course, the details of the trade matter; they give insight into the direction in which the Sky’s front office steering the future of the franchise. Chicago is emphasising youth over instant success by acquiring two future first-round selections. But most importantly, with Reese departing the roster, they have highlighted the player they see leading this team into battle for years to come—Kamilla Cardoso.
Kamilla Cardoso is now the face of the franchise
Whether or not Chicago fans agree with the decision, the Sky have pledged their allegiance to Kamilla Cardoso. Time will tell whether the trust placed in the Brazilian center was the correct decision, but as the 2025 WNBA season came to a close, it was clear that the Reese/Cardoso experiment was not working.
Both Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso are at their most dangerous when they can go to work on the interior. Reese has arguably become the most dominant rebounder in recent history for the Chicago Sky, averaging 12.9 rebounds per game throughout her career. Cardoso showed during her time at South Carolina and in flashes with the Sky that, with proper floor spacing, she can dominate offensively in and around the paint.
Now, the pressure is on Cardoso to repay the faith that general manager Jeff Pagliocca has shown her. The 24-year-old must become a more consistent scorer for Chicago. During the 2025 WNBA season, Cardoso recorded 13.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.8% from the floor.
Even with this amplified spotlight focusing on the former Gamecocks center, Pagliocca has a responsibility to build a capable roster around the player. Without Reese on the team and Courtney Vandersloot yet to confirm her future with the franchise, Chicago is again lacking a renowned playmaker. Without a star to facilitate offensive proceedings for the Sky, Cardoso will be unable to unlock her true scoring potential.
It would not be a normal day in the WNBA if the Chicago Sky did not find a way to steal the headlines. However, the confirmed departure of Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream will send shockwaves through the league. There are a lot of unknown factors surrounding this deal, but one thing is for certain: Kamilla Cardoso is now the face of the franchise.
