Cheryl Reeve is famous for many reasons. No WNBA head coach has won more games than she has. Moreover, she led the Minnesota Lynx to four championships in the 2010s and has the team looking like a true title contender once again, even when the odds were stacked against her.
She also has an awesome T-shirt collection.
The WNBA has always been an activist league. Players have historically stood up against racism and advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, among many other things. Reeve has been a part of that for many, many years. Nowadays, she regularly shows her support for marginalized communities by wearing bold statement T-shirts on the sidelines.
Those shirts have drawn so much attention that there is actually an Instagram account dedicated to them. Cherylsshirts has over 8,000 followers and faithfully posts Reeve’s iconic outfits.
The shirts were, of course, a topic when Reeve appeared on Megan Rapinoe’s new podcast Why Are You Like This, and Reeve shared the very simple motivation behind her outfit choices. The episode was recorded during All-Star weekend but came out on August 13.
“I want people to be seen, feel seen, heard,” Reeve said. “And there’re just so many things that we could really champion for women and for other marginalized groups. I just started doing that, and I just heard from so many people what it meant to them, and so we’ve continued doing that.”
It’s also a simple reminder of what the WNBA has meant to many members of marginalized communities. Ever since its first season, the WNBA has been viewed as a sort of safe space, particularly for Black women and women of color, and queer, non-binary, and trans people. That feeling has been getting a bit lost recently.
What shirts has Reeve worn recently?
Reeve’s shirts cover a wide range of topics, from Black Lives Matter to pro trans advocacy to highlighting violence against women. She has recently worn shirts with the slogans “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights,” “Immigrant,” “Stop Violence Against Women,” and “Trans Kids Belong.”
The latter came after an ESPN article that featured harmful and ill-informed anti-trans rhetoric from Sophie Cunningham came out and sparked anti-trans rallies before Fever games. However, not all fans and players agree with Cunningham and apprechiate Reeve for sending an opposing message. The post with her “Trans kids Belong” shirt is the most liked (almost 27 thousand likes) and interactive post by the Instagram account. Gabby Williams even reposted it, and Stefanie Dolson wore a very Cheryl-Reeve-like “Trans Rights Are Human Rights” shirt to a game against Indiana—before Reeve wore her statment shirt on the topic.
Reeve doesn’t stop at T-shirts, however. She is also not afraid to speak out publicly on any issues that matter to her, her players, and the majority of WNBA fans.
