Chennedy Carter is off to an unbelievably hot start to the 2026 season, and her ability to thrive in her new role with the Aces shows a level of maturity and growth that will hopefully keep the guard in the league for years to come.
In her first three games for Las Vegas, Carter is averaging 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and two steals per game, shooting 73% from the floor in 21 minutes off the bench. She's stunned defenses with her speed and unique ability to get to the rim, and led the Aces to a win against the Sun with 27 points and eight rebounds.
For Carter, though, this start is bigger than a few good performances. After having to fight her way back into the league after stints in Mexico and Saudi Arabia in 2025, Carter is playing to prove every GM that passed on her wrong. She's playing to show that, when properly invested in, she can bring any team to that next level.
Carter's rocky start in the W
Women's basketball watchers knew that Carter was a special talent long before she ever stepped onto a WNBA court. In 2019, as a junior at Texas A&M, she torched the U.S. National Team by scoring 34 points, setting a collegiate record against Team USA. She took that momentum with her into the big leagues, being drafted #4 to the Atlanta Dream in 2020. She averaged 17.4 points and 3.4 assists her rookie season, and has continued to put up similarly impressive numbers.
Since then, Carter's career has been muddled with a number of locker room issues that made GMs question if her on-court production was worth keeping her on the floor. In 2021, she was suspended from the Dream after an altercation with guard Courtney Williams, and other behavioral issues led to her depatures from both the Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky. After finding trouble signing with a team for the 2025 season, she opted to play overseas.
In the less-skilled leagues abroad, Carter put up crazy numbers: at one point, she averaged 34.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and four assists over10 games in Saudi Arabia. The skill never left; it just didn't have a place in the W.
A new era for Carter
After her stunning performance against the Sun, Carter addressed the media with a seemingly new attitude. She spoke to her resilience and her gratitude to the Aces organization for trusting in her, saying, "I've been at the mountaintop, I've been at the bottom, I've been in between...it's just trusting my growth, knowing that I'm one of the best skilled guards in the country, and I'm gonna keep working hard everyday."
"I remember you, just asking me, a million questions and so excited about the WNBA."

Not only is she tearing it up on the court, but it seems like Carter is also mentally ready for this return to the league. It's undeniable that when she's on the court, she's one of the best guards the W has seen, and this first week of the 2026 has been so much better because we've gotten to see her back. Hopefully, this time, she's equipped with the skills to stay here for as long as possible.
