Unrivaled is absolutely stuffed full of incredibly talented women's professional basketball players, and Chelsea Gray spent most of the season proving why she's at the top of that list. On Monday Unrivaled announced that the four-time WNBA Champion and Aces guard had won the league's MVP award — an award she earned decisively.
Gray, who has been enjoying her second season in the 3x3 league based in Miami, earned the award based on votes from coaches, the media, fans, players, and broadcasters.
This year Gray average career highs in points, with 24.2 per game, as well as rebounds (5.6 per game), and assists (6.1 per game). She also led the entire league in total points with 339, assists with 89, made 3-pointers with 49, and assists per game with 6.1. She tied the league's record for most 3-pointers made in a single game when she landed 10 on February 22.
Gray also dominated this year's 1-on-1 tournament, where she made it to the championship match against Allisha Gray. Ultimately, Chelsea Gray won the series between the pair, which was played as a series of matches, ultimately culminating in one player winning the majority of the games.
Chelsea Gray dominated Unrivaled from start to finish
It only took one game for Gray to remind everyone at Unrivaled — and everyone watching from home — who the undisputed champion of the league was always going to be. After emerging as one of the top players for the Rose BC and Unrivaled last year, she came into this season ready to prove that she has what it takes to be the best.
Gray led the Rose to an 80-60 win over the Lunar Owls BC in her first game back in Miami in January. She racked up 35 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals in just over 21 minutes of play while shooting 5-10 from three and 14-2 from the field. Gray proved herself both offensively and defensively, and made it clear that she was on a mission. She ultimately claimed the $200,000 prize and became the league's second 1 on 1 champion in its short history.
“Grateful. Humbled. Excited,” Chelsea Gray said at the time. “A lot of people didn't pick me to be sitting here talking to y'all. Keep on surprising people. I love it.”
The Rose BC ended the season in 4th place
The Rose BC are heading to the semifinals today after finishing the second season of Unrivaled in fourth place. The team ended the regular season with a 6-8 record.
