Caitlin Clark picked up her sixth technical foul within two minutes of yesterday's Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty game—something that will put Indiana in an uncomfortable position if she picks up on more. Players in the WNBA are automatically suspended for one game if they pick up eight technical fouls in a season.
Clark is already facing a $1,000 fine for the sixth tech, and a seventh one will see her fined $1,500. Should she receive another technical foul after that, she'll not only be suspended for one game—each additional technical foul will result in a one-game suspension. We are already past the halfway point of the 2026 WNBA season, but multiple suspensions would definitely be tough for the Fever to manage at this point in the season. In other words, Clark may have to tone down some of her on-court responses and reactions, or she could end up being detrimental to the Fever's plans.
After a season's beginning that wasn't exactly smooth, the Indiana Fever are fifth in the league with 16 wins and 10 losses. That puts the team squarely in playoffs contention, and if they stay the course, they could end up going even further than they did last season. Clark will be a huge part of that process, and the Fever will undoubtedly count on her.
Clark's tech count is almost the highest in the league
Clark and the Phoenix Mercury's Kahleah Copper both have six technical fouls, which means they have the second-highest in the league. Only Angel Reese, who has seven technical fouls so far, has more. Like the Fever, the Dream is also faced with the possibility that Reese could end up missing a lot of games toward the end of the season if her own trend of tacking on technical fouls continues.
Clark picked up her sixth technical foul early in yesterday's game in Indianapolis. She and Jonquel Jones made hard contact after the latter set a screen, which prompted Clark to complain to the referees that a foul wasn't called. The referees didn't agree, and instead issued Clark her own foul.
The Fever went on to beat the Liberty 108-88, a huge win over the 2024 WNBA Champions. This game was played one day after Clark posted 45 points and 10 assists and set a few league and franchise records while doing so. There's no disputing she's a crucial part of the team, and hopefully that's something she'll keep in mind as the Fever continues to navigate this season.
