This was a game that will live long in the memories of WNBA fans. The Dallas Wings and the Indiana Fever faced off in a relentless game that truly had it all. Star power, incredible pace, devastating shooting, and physical matchups. But most importantly, the rivalry of Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers resumed, and despite scoring the same number of points (20), it was Dallas' talisman who came out looking like the more polished prospect.
In a game that swung back and forth until the final buzzer, the Wings emerged with a thrilling 107–104 victory over the Fever. While Arike Ogunbowale, Aaliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell delivered extraordinary performances for their respective teams, the brightest spotlight fell on a rivalry that features two future MVP candidates -- Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers.
While Clark generates the most buzz online, Bueckers’ trajectory on the court appears to be developing at a faster pace.
Paige Bueckers eclipses Caitlin Clark in their first meeting of 2026
Both players put up 20 points each and contributed all over the court, yet Paige Bueckers' performance felt seamless in comparison to her opponent as she breezed to her spots while also forcing Clark into some uncomfortable offensive positions.
Caitlin Clark was highly active throughout the contest, and it was clear she wanted to make her presence felt immediately after missing the majority of her sophomore year due to injuries. While the Fever superstar amassed 20 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, she also accumulated five turnovers -- two of which were offensive fouls -- while shooting just 38.9% from the floor.
In contrast, Bueckers recorded 20 points, three rebounds, and four assists. However, the 24-year-old was much more efficient from the floor than her nemesis -- draining 80% of her field-goal attempts. Additionally, Bueckers and her teammates targeted Clark’s defensive shortcomings, scoring on all six possessions in the first half when she was the primary defender.
While Bueckers showcased a more natural, free-flowing performance, it was clear that Clark has still not returned to full fitness. During her stints on the bench, the Iowa alum appeared to wear some form of back support. Clark continued to dictate to the offense when she was on the court, but if she is struggling with injury issues, her production will be limited regardless of her opponent.
It may have only been the first game of the season, but Paige Bueckers outshone Caitlin Clark with a seamless all-around performance. Statistically, there was little separating the two rivals, yet Bueckers’ remarkable efficiency and elite ball security could fuel the narrative that the Dallas Wings guard has gained the upper hand in the exciting rivalry.
