Today marks the beginning of the WNBA season, and there's a full slate of games being played from Friday all the way through Sunday evening.
Each game will be action-packed and dynamic, but some games are going to draw more attention than others, and that's because there are a few heated battles (and an incredible first) headling the show. Here are three key things WNBA fans should pay attention to this weekend.
The Indiana Fever host the Chicago Sky
The Indiana Fever will host the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday, May 17 — the first regular season game for both teams, the Fever's home opener, and the first time Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will play on another since the 2024 season.
What to watch for: fans will make sure any exchanges between Clark and Reese are well-documented, but there's plenty to look for in this game. Hailey Van Lith will likely make her rookie season debut, hopefully clocking a few minutes when Courtney Vandersloot is subbed out, and Makayla Timpson might get a few minutes of her own for the Fever. Sophie Cunningham is expected to play after injuring her foot during a preseason game against the Dream, and DeWanna Bonner's leadership will be tested for real.
The New York Liberty defends their title
The Liberty will square off against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, May 17. There is a lot going on with this game: the Liberty will be out to prove that they're on the path toward a repeat championship win, Breanna Stewart will be playing her first game since undergoing meniscus surgery in March, and MVP A'ja Wilson will also be set on underscoring that she's the best player in the league.
The Golden State Valkyries play their first game
At long last, the Golden State Valkyries will hit the court for the first time in the regular season to take on the Los Angeles Sparks at home in San Francisco. When it comes to Golden State, the key elements to look for will be the performances of Tiffany Hayes, who is shaping up to be something of an anchor for the team, and the European additions who a lot of American fans aren't as familiar with.
One of those players is Janelle Salaün, who has arrived in the Bay Area after missing training camp due to prior commitments. Salaün is a member of the French National Team and was on the squad during the team's silver medal finish at the Paris Olympic Games last year
