Brittney Griner, who joined the Atlanta Dream this past offseason, has led her team to a 3-2 record to begin the 2025 WNBA season. However, a heated moment with the referees on live TV recently went viral, via Hoop Central.
A reporter from CBS Sports Network was attempting to interview Griner during a recent game. While the reporter began the interview, Griner was looking in an opposite direction. It was clear that the Dream star was not listening to the question.
The referees then walked by and Griner headed towards them. The reporter said Griner was speaking to the referees about "holding." It is difficult to initially hear what Griner was saying, but she was unquestionably speaking in a passionate manner. At the end, Griner continued speaking while heading back towards the interview. Her final message to the referees was painfully clear.
"Be f**king better!" Griner exclaimed.
Brittney Griner goes off on referees
It certainly wasn't the most professional moment. Griner could have probably waited for a different time to make her point. Perhaps yelling at the referees before an interview was her way of specifically calling them out. Or, she simply did not think much of the fact that a reporter was waiting to speak to her on live TV.
Either way, it was not a good look. Griner, a WNBA veteran, could face punishment from the league following her actions.
Of course, this is a player who has never been shy about sharing her brutally honest thoughts. Griner is going to say exactly what is on her mind. Some fans love it, others don't. Griner likely does not care what anyone has to say about her approach, though.
In 2025, the nine-time WNBA All-Star is averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per outing. She is also shooting 49 percent from the field. At 34 years old, she is still one of the better players in the entire league.
Dream's strong start to 2025 WNBA season
The Dream most recently defeated the Connecticut Sun by a final score of 79-55. Atlanta's next game will be played on Tuesday night against the Sparks in Los Angeles. With Griner on the roster, this Dream team could become a true postseason contender. They are off to a fairly strong start in 2025, and will look to add another victory to the win column on Tuesday night.
