The fact no WNBA fan wants to believe: the Las Vegas Aces statistically have the worst whistle in the league -- and Becky Hammon made sure everyone heard about it. During her postgame media availability, the Aces head coach openly blasted the officiating and was frustrated by what she saw as her team fell to defeat against the Dallas Wings.

Many expected the reigning champions to dominate the regular season as the front office retained the superstar core of A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Jewell Lloyd, while also adding the supremely talented Chennedy Carter to the mix. However, a defeat to the Wings saw the side chalk up their third loss of the season, and Becky Hammon was not shy in discussing her discontent with the referee's performance.

During her postgame press conference, Hammon took aim at the officials by stating, "I am f-ing tired of that bullsh--. I'm not saying they didn't earn their 22 down there, but when Awak Kuier shoots more than A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Chennedy Carter all combined, that's a problem."

Hammon's analysis highlights shocking Aces free throw statistics

Believe it or not, Becky Hammon may have been onto something when she blasted the officiating her team endured during the Dallas Wings game. I know what you are thinking: "A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces spend more time at the line than any team." I agreed with this notion, but this could not have been further from the truth.

Throughout the 2026 season, the Aces sit at the bottom of the rankings in free throws attempted per game (18.3) -- tied with the Minnesota Lynx for the lowest average in the WNBA. What makes this statistic more damning is that A'ja Wilson, NaLyssa Smith, and Chennedy Carter combine for 14 of these shots from the charity stripe.

The Aces are a team that works the ball inside and does not over-rely on shooting from deep. In fact, Las Vegas currently ranks 12th in the entire WNBA in 3-point attempts per game (20.6). This style of play requires physical work on the interior, which usually leads to more shooting fouls being drawn, especially when your star center is the current MVP of the league -- this has not been the case.

Las Vegas’ 95-87 loss to Dallas only added fuel to the frustration, with the Wings attempting 22 free throws compared to just 12 for the Aces. While this may have been just one game in isolation, the bigger picture shows that this has been a common trend throughout the current campaign.

The eye test would suggest that Becky Hammon's comments are nonsense; the Las Vegas Aces and A'ja Wilson live at the free throw line. Well, apparently not. Statistics don't lie. While the nature of these fouls may come under the spotlight, as it stands, the 2025 WNBA champions do have the worst whistle in the league.
