Azzi Fudd will participate in the 3-point contest this Friday at WNBA All-Star, a decision that will give the rookie the chance to showcase one of her strongest skills to fans who might not watch her play throughout the regular season. Fudd will be joined by Marina Mabrey, Rhyne Howard, Bridget Carleton, Natisha Hiedeman, and Janelle Salaun in the contest.
Fudd is the fourth rookie to compete in the 3-point contest. She joins Howard as well as Sonia Citron, who competed in the contest last year, and Kelsey Mitchell. No rookie has won the 3-point contest yet, but if there's one that could do it, it just might be Fudd.
The UConn graduate was known for her shooting prowess throughout her time at the school, and one of the most consistent observations many Dallas Wings fans have made is that they'd love to see her shooting as much as possible for the team. So Friday's contest will give Fudd the chance to shine, her fans the chance to see what she can do, and could even offer a surprise ending.
Azzi Fudd will face tough compeitition
As many outlets reported, three players (Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, and Kayla McBride) were asked about competing in the 3-point contest and turned it down. But Fudd will have to go up against quite a few talented shooters. That includes Mabrey, who currently leads the league in 3-pointers made with 82; Howards is in second place with 79, Salaun has 67, Carleton has 65, Hiedeman has 57, and Fudd has 50.
While her numbers might be the lowest of this group, Fudd is still in tenth place in terms of the entire WNBA.
This year's 3-point contest will be made up of two rounds, ESPN reported today. In the first, racks will be placed at five shooting locations around the arc. Each rack will be loaded with five balls—four of the balls are worth one point, and the "money ball" will be worth two points. One of the racks will be loaded with only "money balls."
The two players who end round one with the highest scores will progress to the second round, which will see them repeat the first round. All players get to decide where their "money ball" is placed on each rack.
The 3-point contest will begin Friday night at 8 p.m. ET, and will be followed by the All-Star Game on Saturday.
