Aces announce 2020 coaching staff

The Las Vegas Aces made an addition to their coaching staff familiar to WNBA fans. Tanisha Wright will join assistant coach Vickie Johnson and head coach and president of basketball operations Bill Laimbeer on the bench in 2020.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity I have to continue my coaching career and learn from two of the best in the business in Coach Laimbeer and Coach Johnson,” Wright said in a team release. “I hope that my experience and knowledge of the game will be a strong resource in my new position with the Aces.”

Wright played 14 seasons in the WNBA, most recently with the New York Liberty. The Penn State alum played for Laimbeer in New York in 2015 and 2016. Wright was a seven-time All-Defense selection in her career, including a First-Team All-Defense nod en route to a championship in 2010 with the Seattle Storm.

“Tanisha was the ultimate competitor as a player, and I was fortunate to have her in New York,” Laimbeer said. “She prepared herself and her teammates both physically and mentally for every game, and I expect her to take that same approach as she transitions to a full-time coaching career.”

Wright stepped away for one year after the 2016 season. She joined the staff at UNC Charlotte as an assistant coach in 2017-18 and spent three seasons in total with the program. Wright returned to the WNBA in 2018, signing with the Minnesota Lynx as a free agent.

The Liberty acquired Wright last April from Minnesota in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick. That pick was later flipped to Indiana in the Shenise Johnson trade this offseason; the Fever used that No. 14 overall pick to select Iowa’s Kathleen Doyle.

In Las Vegas, Wright will fill the seat occupied by Kelly Raimon. Raimon joined the Liberty coaching staff last month after spending two seasons with the Aces.
