A big loss for Kellie Harper

Tennessee sophomore Jazmine Massengill has entered the transfer portal.

During the 2019-20 season, Massengill started all but one game for the Lady Vols, averaging 28.5 minutes, 6.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Under first-year coach Kellie Harper, Tennessee finished with a 21-10 (10-6) record, which was sixth in the SEC.

More from SEC

“After praying and receiving support from my family, I’ve made the most difficult decision and decided to put my name in the transfer portal,” Massengill said. “I truly appreciate my teammates and the coaching staff for their support and allowing me to do what is in my best interest.”

Coming into Tennessee, she was a five-star recruit, and No. 25 in the 2018 freshman class.  Massengill spent her freshman season at Tennessee under Holly Warlick, where the team finished with a 19-13 (7-9 SEC) record and an historic first-round exit in the NCAA tournament. Following that season, Warlick was “relieved of her duties” and the program was hit with a number of transfers. That season, Massengill started one game and averaged 3.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

SEC Player of the Year Rhyne Howard, who grew up near Massengill, has already made her pitch in the recruitment process, even if jokingly. She shared Massengill’s post on Instagram with the caption “reunion?” and tagged incoming five-star Kentucky freshman Treasure Hunt. Massengill and Hunt played at the same high school.

Whether it’s within the SEC or beyond, Massengill will make an impact wherever she lands.
