The MVP announces her comeback

Almost eight months after suffering a devastating injury, Breanna Stewart says she’s planning to return to the court for Team USA’s exhibition contest against UConn on January 27.

As a member of the Huskies, Stewart won four NCAA titles and four Final Four Most Outstanding Player awards, along with a host of other honors. For USA Basketball, Stewart is a three-time Female Athlete of the Year and featured on the 2016 Olympic team and the 2014 and 2018 FIBA World Cup teams, all of which won gold medals.

She won’t be the only star Husky to return to face her alma mater — the United States national team pool includes 10 UConn alumni, including USA Basketball core players Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi.

The 2018 WNBA MVP has been recovering from rupturing her Achilles tendon during April’s EuroLeague Women championship game. The injury required surgery and kept Stewart out of the 2019 WNBA season.

Stewart, who was recently named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, told SportsCenter in August that while she didn’t have a timetable, she would “for sure” be ready for the 2020 WNBA season and the Olympics. In October, she confirmed that she was recovering “ahead of schedule” and planned to return in early 2020.

Both of the United States’ winter college tour games — the other is February 2 against Louisville — will be nationally televised.
