What’s fascinating about the Indiana Fever changing direction in leadership — firing Pokey Chatman and giving Tamika Catchings wider latitude on basketball decisions — is how much of their coming season is already baked into what they’ve got on the books, unless there’s a big trade or two coming. All four of their full-protection contracts return in 2020 — Natalie Achonwa, Candice Dupree, Shenise Johnson and Erica Wheeler — along with seven others also signed for next season, leaving a single open roster spot if the Fever elect to keep all 11 of those players. Notably, when Chatman picked up Burke early last season, she signed her to a rookie scale deal, not a rest-of-season deal, so the valuable wing is Fever-tied for years to come. Both Tiffany Mitchell and Betnijah Laney are free agents this offseason, and plenty of teams need defenders, so that could be a way to break up the logjam. But this Fever team, which looked to be on the cusp of playoff success last season, might be pretty similar to the 2019 version.
