Indiana Fever

In the third year of the post-Catchings era in Indy, the Fever made big strides in their rebuild, finishing just two games out of the Playoffs with huge performances from their young core.

13 wins for Pokey Chatman moved her up in to a tie with Richie Adubato for tenth all-time in the WNBA with 134 regular season wins each. Chatman coached her 300th regular season game in the WNBA along the way. She’s alone at tenth all-time in that category.

Several new individual Fever records were established this year:

  • In the final game of the season, Kelsey Mitchell made nine threes, setting a new WNBA regular season record and tying Kristi Toliver for the overall WNBA record. Toliver had nine in a game in the 2017 Playoffs.
  • Mitchell had 38 points in that game, a new Fever single-game record, beating Katie Douglas’s 34 points against the Mystics in 2009.
  • Mitchell fell one three short of tying Douglas’s 80 made threes in 2012, the current Fever record, but she had 211 attempts (6.2 per game), new franchise highs.
  • Teaira McCowan was huge (pun intended) on the boards, setting new Fever rookie game records for offensive rebounds (9 on June 19), defensive rebounds (13 on August 25), and total rebounds (19 on August 25).
  • McCowan also established new Fever rookie season records with 108 offensive rebounds (3.2 per game), 197 defensive rebounds, 44 blocks, and 119 made two-pointers (3.5 per game).
  • She set new Fever records for any player with 305 total rebounds this season and a 19.5% rebounding percentage in 2019.
  • Erica Wheeler became the first undrafted player to win WNBA All Star MVP and had a big year for the Fever in terms of assists. She set a franchise record with 171 assists this year (5.0 per game) and an assist percentage of 35.4%.

In terms of team records, there were plenty:

  • On June 29, they had 30 assists against the Aces, establishing a new single-game record for the Fever. The previous best was 27 against the Shock back in 2004.
  • In their final game of the season, the Fever made 38 of their 65 shots from the field, setting a new single-game Fever record for field goal percentage at 58.5%.
  • The Fever had 889 defensive rebounds as a team in 2019, topping their previous record of 819 in 2018. They also had a franchise record 26.1 defensive rebounds per game.
  • They also had 1,194 total rebounds as a team and 35.1 rebounds per game, both beating Indiana’s 2007 season (1,153 total and 33.9 per game).

And, finally, as far as milestones go, several Fever players reached new levels this year:

  • Candice Dupree moved up to a tie with Katie Smith for 5th all-time in scoring (6,452), and she is now 2nd in field goals made (2,652), 8th in rebounding (2,943), 13th in games played (446), and 16th in made free throws (1,122).
  • On the way there, Dupree recorded her 2,500th two-pointer made along with her 300th block and 400th steal. She is just the ninth WNBA player with 300+ blocks and 400+ steals.
  • Tiffany Mitchell played her 100th game, scored her 1,000th point, and got her 100 steal.
  • Natalie Achonwa scored her 1,000th point.
  • Betnijah Laney played her 100th WNBA game.
  • Erica Wheeler recorded her 500th assist and 100th made three.
  • Kelsey Mitchell made her 100th three.
