Atlanta Dream

The Atlanta Dream had a notoriously down season for a team that was in a five-game WNBA Semifinals series just a year ago. After going 23-11 in 2018, they finished 8-26 this year, a 44.1% drop in win percentage in just one season. That year-over-year drop is tied for third all-time, behind only the 2011 Washington Mystics (6-28 in 2011 after 22-12 in 2010) and the 1999 Cleveland Rockers (7-25 in 1999 after 20-10 in 1998).

Regardless, their core still made their way to some major milestones and Atlanta Dream records in 2019:

  • Monique Billings set a new Dream record for rebound percentage in a season (16.8%), edging out Sancho Lyttle in 2010 and Erika de Souza in 2013 (16.1% each).
  • Tiffany Hayes became the Dream’s new all-time leader in three-pointers attempted, ending the season with 857 in her career so far, passing up the inactive Angel McCoughtry.

As a team, the Dream set several new single-season franchise records:

  • They had 892 defensive rebounds, passing up their 885 in 2018.
  • They had 184 blocks, passing up their 181 in 2011, also posting a new high in blocks per game (5.4), their previous best being 5.3 in 2011.
  • They made 217 total threes, 15 better than their previous record of 202 in 2008. They averaged 6.4 made threes, besting 2008 (5.9).
  • Part of the reason for that was their new high in threes attempted (748), blowing away their old record of 626 from last season. They averaged 22 per game, up from 18.4 in 2018, setting a new record in that category as well.

In terms of milestones, four of the Dream’s starters made big moves:

  • Renee Montgomery eclipsed the 3,500-point mark, just one of 50 to ever get there. She also made her 500th three and passed up Maya Moore to reach 12th place all-time in made threes with 532 at the season’s end.
  • Hayes reached the 3,000-point mark, making her 1,000th field goal in the process. She folllows McCoughtry as just the second player to score 3,000 points with the Dream.
  • Jessica Breland got her 300th career block, moving up to 17th in that category.
  • Brittney Sykes scored her 1,000th point, becoming the first member of the 2017 Draft class to reach that mark.
