Seattle Storm

The Storm entered the 2019 season technically the defending champs, but without reigning MVP Breanna Stewart and face of the franchise Sue Bird, they were far from the team they were a year ago. Injuries to Jewell Loyd and Jordin Canada complicated rotations, but the Storm relied on record-setting defense to get back to the Playoffs.

Several individuals set new Storm records:

  • Natasha Howard had 74 total steals, blowing away the previous Storm high of 61 by Sonja Henning in 2000.
  • Canada also beat the previous record of 68 and may have had the new record if she played a full season since she set a new Storm record with 2.3 steals per game.
  • Howard put up 413 field goal attempts from inside the arc, ten more than the previous Storm record of 403 by Lauren Jackson in 2003.
  • Sami Whitcomb had 184 three-point attempts (5.6 per game), beating Loyd’s 181 (5.3 per game) from last year.
  • Alysha Clark led the league in three-point efficiency at 48.1%, also a new Storm season record.

With two of the team’s best in steals all-time, the Storm set three new records as a franchise:

  • The Storm had 18 steals against the Aces on July 19, one better than their previous best from 2009 against the Silver Stars.
  • They had 323 total steals as a team, 21 better than their previous record of 302 in 2004.
  • They averaged 9.5 steals per game, also besting their previous franchise record of 8.9 in 2004.

Several players reached new milestones in 2019:

  • Howard played her 200th game, scored her 1,500th point, and recorded her 200th block.
  • Clark scored her 1,500th point and made her 200th three.
  • Loyd made her 200th three on the same day as Clark, the pair becoming the first teammates to reach that mark on the same day.
  • Whitcomb and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each made their 100th threes.
