Cappie Pondexter headlines basketball portion of Chicago Park District and Nike Girls Camp
Nike partnered with the Chicago Park District to provide a camp experience spanning multiple sports with various Nike athletes.
Cappie Pondexter will run basketball drills and give a talk about her basketball journey as part of Girls Camp, a week-long camp August 5-9 run by the Chicago Park District and Nike in partnership.
Pondexter spent 13 years in the WNBA, with stops including Chicago and Phoenix enroute to winning two titles and receiving seven All-Star selections. She announced her retirement from the league last spring. While Pondexter is originally from California, she was raised in Chicago and played basketball at John Marshall Metropolitan High School, where she was named a WBCA All-American.

Girls Camp is a partnership between the Chicago Park District and Nike to expose Chicago-area girls between the ages of nine and 13 to a variety of sports, including basketball. The partnership is a part of Nike’s broader “Sport Changes Everything” summer campaign, and is aimed at building confidence in its attendees to feel comfortable in traditionally male-dominated spaces. The camp takes place across five days at Grand Crossing Park and at Eckhart Park.
In addition to Pondexter, Michele Vasconcelos and Tori Franklin will also lead their own activities throughout the week.
Vasconcelos is a midfielder for the Chicago Red Stars, and was drafted in 2017 by the Red Stars after playing soccer for five years at Brigham Young University. Franklin is an Olympic triple jumper from Westmont, Illinois, and currently holds the United States record for women’s triple jump.
The camp also has dance, tumbling, yoga and general health and wellness activities. Girls Camp is the second-to-last Nike Chicago event of the summer that is a part of the “Sports Changes Everything” campaign. Legacy Summit, a program aimed at increasing the number of women in coaching positions across the Chicagoland area, will take place in late August.
