2020 WNBA mock draft: Big Board 2.0 with team projections
11. Washington Mystics select Kaila Charles, 6’1 G/F, Maryland
The biggest pushback I got from my initial 2020 list came from not including Kaila Charles, even as multiple WNBA talent evaluators acknowledged the limited upside she has if she doesn’t figure out how to start making perimeter shots. She shot 1-for-14 from three last year, and someone who is going to need to make her living as a 2/3 in the league needs more range than that. Still, there’s every reason for optimism in the remainder of her game, from her effective dribble penetration to her absurd leaping ability, basketball IQ and above-average ability to leap into passing lanes and produce live-ball turnovers. And in Washington, she’ll be surrounded by shooters, coached by a staff that brings out the best in a player’s shot, and close to her college home as she learns. That’s reason aplenty for the Mystics to pick her.
