Tina Charles and Britney Griner named WNBA Players of the Week

Tina Charles and Britney Griner win Player of the Week honorsTina Charles was named the Eastern Conference player of the week after averaging 20.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and 3.0 apg.

Charles’ production helped the New York Liberty pull out some gutsy wins, including an 84-83 win over the Seattle Storm and an 80-76 victory against the Phoenix Mercury.

The significance behind Charles performances were the fact that she had to face three of the league’s most elite post players in Liz Cambage, Natasha Howard, and Brittney Griner.

In a showdown against Howard and the Seattle Storm, Charles went 11-for-22 from the field and led all scorers with 26 points.

Two nights later, Charles battled it out in the post yet again against Griner, finishing the game with 23 points, 12 boards, and 4 assists.

The New York Liberty fell to defeat against the Las Vegas Aces, finishing with an overall 2-1 record this past week.

Charles is currently second in the league in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game.

Brittney Griner dominated in the West, averaging 30.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg, and 3.0 bpg.

Griner’s double-double performances helped the Phoenix Mercury finish with a 1-1 record.

Against the New York Liberty, Griner scored 30 points, and went 8-9 from the charity stripe.

On the defensive end, Griner rejected three shots and secured eight rebounds.

In a win over the Atlanta Dream, Griner finished the game with 31 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and swatted three shots.

Griner continued to prove that she can be effective from the free-throw line, netting in 9-of-11 free throw attempts.

In matchups against the New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream, Griner led all scorers in points per game, and Griner leads the WNBA in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game.
