Thirty-six college athletes to compete for 12 spots

The season for USA Basketball team trials is upon us. The organization announced the invitees for the 2019 U19 World Cup earlier this week. Thursday, they announced the 36 athletes who will try out for the 2019 Pan American Games squad.

Several conferences received multiple invitees, led by the Pac-12 with seven. The Big Ten and Big 12 each had six athletes invited, while the ACC and SEC will send five each. The Ivy League and Conference USA will send two apiece. The AAC and Missouri Valley will each send a representative, and one athlete is currently in the process of transferring. Texas, Oregon State, and Rice are the only schools sending multiple athletes, with each school sending two players.

The group includes 12 players who have won medals as part of USA Basketball in previous international competitions and an additional 11 athletes who have participated in team trials before. The remaining 13 will be taking part in their first attempt at making a USA national team.

Invitees must be U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in college and will still be college-eligible for the 2019-20 season. The 36 women will report to the United States Olympic Training Center for trials on May 16. The trials will continue at the Colorado Springs facility through May 20.

The twelve players selected for the team will return to Colorado Springs for training camp from July 23-Aug. 5. They will immediately leave for Lima, Peru, where the women’s tournament will be held from Aug. 6-10.
