Six Mercury players have at least ten years of service, eight have two years or fewer in camp. It’s clear what Jim Pitman has done here, and the mix should make for a fascinating camp, especially as Sandy Brondello figures out where her Diana Taurasi production will come from as Taurasi recovers from back surgery… Briann January is the closest thing the WNBA has to Chris Paul, so it’s gratifying to see her in a place that rewarded her work and fits her style of play. That’s a big bet on her age 32-34 seasons, but the Mercury don’t seem to age like other WNBA teams… it is easy to see how all three of the rookies selected in the top 13 in this draft, Alanna Smith, Brianna Turner and Sophie Cunningham, fit into the plan here, and not just in 2019…
