Boyd looks to help Liberty return to playoffs after tough season
WNBA teams have only a few short weeks to sort out their rosters before the April draft. The New York Liberty took another step in that direction today, announcing that they had re-signed point guard Brittany Boyd.
Boyd returned to the court for the Liberty last year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon at the beginning of the 2017 season. After surgery and extensive rehab, she appeared in 30 games for the team in 2018, including 14 starts.

The concerns after Boyd’s 2017 injury turned out to be exaggerated. Upon her return, she had career highs in starts (14), minutes per game (20.4), 3-point percentage (37.0), free throw percentage (77.4) and assists per game (5.3). Her field goal percentage (41.4) was the highest of her three full seasons.
When Boyd was taken out of California as the No. 9 pick in the 2015 draft, she immediately made an impact. She was a member of the 2015 All-Rookie team after leading the first-year players in steals per game (1.1) and ranking sixth in points per game (6.6).
She continued on an upward trajectory in 2016, when she ranked fourth in the league with 1.6 spg and 15th with 3.6 assists per game. That year, she appeared in the postseason for the first time.
The Liberty are looking to get back to the playoffs after a tough season when their ownership and location were up in the air. They went 7-27 and ended the season on a 13-game losing streak.
In addition to Boyd, the team has also come to terms with two restricted free agents, guard Rebecca Allen and center Amanda Zahui B. In the international market, they signed French guard Marine Johannes last week.
On Jan. 23, the WNBA announced that the Liberty had been sold to Brooklyn Nets minority owner Joe Tsai. The franchise has since hired former WNBA Director of Basketball and Strategy Analytics Jonathan Kolb as General Manager.
