A remarkable group to enjoy in this year’s tournament

Editor’s note: the ask was a difficult one: I asked the great staff at High Post Hoops if they could only each pick one player to highlight ad must-see in this year’s NCAA Tournament, who would it be? This was separate from questions like “Who is the best player?” or “Which player will be most valuable?” Answers were eclectic, take a look!

Macy Miller, South Dakota State

South Dakota native Macy Miller has been dominate for South Dakota State since she stepped on the court in 2014. The redshirt senior has played 141 games and is the leading scorer in SDSU and Summit League history with 2295 points… so far.

Miller had to redshirt the 2016-2017 season after tearing her right ACL just nine games into her junior season. She came back the next season even better than before, averaging 18.3 points, 3.2 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game.

More from NCAA

Our certified bracketologist, Russell Steinberg, has SDSU as the 5 seed in Portland, and Miller is no stranger to the NCAA tournament.

As a sophomore Miller had 18 points and seven rebounds in the Jackrabbits upset win over Miami. She had 19 points in the team’s 66-65 loss to Stanford, falling just short of leading her team to the Sweet Sixteen. Last season, SDSU was on the other side, getting upset by Villanova in the first round.

Miller has a way of stepping up in big games, scoring 20+ points in 13 games and 30+ points three times this season. In the team’s three games against South Dakota, Miller scored 31, 28 and 30 points.

Her 30 points and 11 rebounds Monday against South Dakota led the team to its ninth NCAA tournament in their Division I era.

The 26-6 Jackrabbits, who haven’t lost since Jan. 6 (to South Dakota in double overtime), are poised to make a run in the tournament. They haven’t lost in regulation since Dec. 20 and have wins against Green Bay and Drake. The Jackrabbits also played a close game with then No. 7 Oregon on Dec. 12.

Miller has averaged 23.7 points over the last 7 games and is averaging 18.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. According to Her Hoops Stats she is averaging 1.17 points per play this season, ninth in the country.

Having already broken both the school and conference scoring record, Miller’s legacy is already cemented. However, a couple of NCAA tournament wins certainly wouldn’t hurt. — Natalie Heavren
