Two of NCAA women’s basketball’s winningest teams renew their series.

On Tuesday, both the UConn and Texas women’s basketball programs announced that they have scheduled a future home-and-home series. In 2020-2021, the Huskies will play host to the Longhorns, while Texas will have a 2021-22 matchup at Austin’s Frank Erwin Center.

While there’s limited history between these two programs, as they have met just eight times, it’s UConn that holds all the bragging rights with an undefeated record.

Most recently, the teams met back on Jan. 15, 2018 when a top-ranked Huskies side won a close game in Austin against number nine Texas. UConn, led by Katie Lou Samuelson (19 points, three rebounds, two assists), fought off the stellar play of Jatarie White, Brooke McCarty, Lashann Higgs, and Airle Atkins – who combined for 59 of Texas’ 71 points – and came back from a double-digit deficit to secure a 75-71 win.

For UConn, the news of the series’ renewal comes on the heels of a dominant 78-41 win over UCF on Sunday. With that win plus a Louisville loss over the weekend, the Huskies moved to number three in the AP Poll.

For Texas, the weekend wasn’t quite as enjoyable, so Tuesday’s news is certainly a welcomed distraction. The Longhorns lost 69-60 against a tough Kansas State side that dug itself out of a 14-point hole.

Both teams get back in action this week, as the Huskies face the Memphis Tigers at home in Hartford’s XL Center, while Texas — who drop to number 19 after the latest AP poll — hosts an in-state rivalry game against Texas Tech.

While fans will have to wait a while longer to see two of the all-time winningest programs in NCAA history face off again, there’s still plenty of fantastic basketball to watch as these two teams look to secure high seeds in this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
