New York Liberty trade Kia Nurse, 2019 second overall pick and as many other first rounders as it takes

Listen, Katie Smith and the Liberty have both a problem and an opportunity. The Liberty have Tina Charles, an absolutely brilliant star in her prime. They have a ton of cap space, no contracts beyond 2019 other than Kia Nurse, and only Bria Hartley and Kiah Stokes even signed for 2019.

But there’s also this: how do the Liberty find a star to pair with Charles before she starts her decline?

Now imagine a world where the Liberty can build a roster full of shooters around Cambage and Charles. It’s a matchup nightmare for anyone, even last year’s WNBA finalists. Does Seattle force Breanna Stewart to chase Charles all over the court? Is Natasha Howard playing Cambage 1-on-1? Same thing in Washington, substituting Elena Delle Donne for Stewart and Emma Meesseman for Howard.

And then there’s the marketing prospect. Liz Cambage was made for the bright lights and big city of New York. She is, in every way, a Broadway show, one that’s been playing out of town. It’s time to bring her to the media capital of the world, something she isn’t likely to mind, either. The new Liberty owner, Joseph Tsai, can put his stamp on the Liberty immediately, and fill Barclays Center, give Liz every chance to earn endorsement dollars and settle into life in Brooklyn.

It’s time for Liz Cambage to open on the big stage, for Tina Charles to get the co-star she deserves, and for the Liberty to finally win the big one. And you trade however many draft picks it takes to bet on that.
