The Los Angeles Sparks’ coaching staff under Derek Fisher is coming together.

The Sparks posted a tweet at 6:00 p.m. yesterday saying they would announce its two assistant coaches, which was enough time for someone else to do some digging and break half the news.

Although the Sparks officially announced that Latricia Trammell will fill one of two assistant coach spots in LA, nothing had been released about the other until around 1:30 p.m. EST today. It was SB Nation’s Matt Ellentuck who reported an hour prior to LA’s press release that Fred Williams, former Dallas Wings head coach, will be Fisher’s lead assistant.

Williams had a falling out with the Wings last season, where he’d been employed since 2014, but prior to that, served as head coach for both the Utah Starzz (now Las Vegas Aces) and the Atlanta Dream. Despite finishing with a .500 record while serving at the helm in Atlanta in 2013, he led them to a WNBA Finals appearance before losing to the Minnesota Lynx.

“Fred knows the WNBA as well as anyone in the business and has incredible experience, including guiding a team to the WNBA Finals,” Fisher said.

Experience, experience and more experience may just be the theme of Fisher’s staff. Not just the amount of time Trammell and Williams have been in the coaching business, but their diverse backgrounds, at different levels of basketball, too.

It also helps that Williams established strong relationships with players while he was with the Wings, including Liz Cambage because you never know if those relationships will help lock in a trade down the road.

With a combined 17 years of head coaching experience, to Fisher’s none, Williams and Trammell are logical hires.

Trammell has a whopping 24 years of coaching experience, but was most recently an assistant for the San Antonio Stars in 2017. She also has two Division I NAIA national championships to her name as a head coach, posting a record of 85-10 in three seasons.
