WATCH: Kalani Brown tells High Post Hoops about her next evolution
“Liz Cambage, Stefanie Dolson- a lot of those players, you see them shoot a trail three every now and then. Picking-and-popping, driving to the basket, I was like, ‘Maybe I should critique my game and kind of add a little bit of that in there.’” -Kalani Brown, Baylor
The “Baylor Big” history of greatness is well-known. In a year where the Lady Bears have no true incumbent point guard, the leadership will come from the post—particularly Baylor standout senior Kalani Brown.
Arguably one of the only true centers left in the women’s college game, Brown enters her senior season already all over the program’s history books. In her three years, she has shot .649 from the field, good for the top career field goal percentage in Baylor women’s basketball history. Brown is also coming off of a tremendously successful 2017-18 season, receiving All American nods from the WBCA, Sports Illustrated, USBWA, Associated Press, espnW and USA Today. She named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player, too.
In a culture of basketball that is visibly shifting toward positionless play, the 6’7 senior stays true to her production in the paint. However, she has been studying from the likes of WNBA all-stars Sylvia Fowles, Liz Cambage and Stefanie Dolson. When discussing the influence of these players on her personal experience of basketball, it is clear Brown’s appreciation for the W has given her something to look forward to in her future. She is doing her homework of the game now. (Rightly so: our current projection has her going third overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft.)
Brown has added components to her game to look for in the upcoming season. During the off season, Brown said she has worked on improving her versatility and creating more of a face-up game. These improvements will make Baylor even more dangerous, particularly in combination with fellow versatile big Lauren Cox.
Though Brown enters her last year, she’s excited for the new additions to the team. “We’re very young and raw,” she said. Baylor might lack the point guard position, but the potential in the new players has Brown confident.
Brown spoke with High Post Hoops on NCAA Women’s National Media Day. Here’s what she had to say:
Baylor next faces South Dakota State in Las Vegas on November 23.
