PODCAST: Chicago Sky head coach, general manager James Wade
The Chicago Sky’s new hire talks about it all: past, present and future.
Host Howard Megdal is joined by the new Chicago Sky head coach and general manager James Wade. The two discuss how Wade found his way into coaching (with an assist from Dan Hughes), what he learned coaching on the staffs of both Hughes and Cheryl Reeve.
“Cheryl is a really intense person,” Wade said on the podcast. “She has a lot of things that she won’t allow. Both she and Dan attack minute problems before they fester into something bigger and some things that other coaches might say, it’s no big deal.”
Wade also dives deep into what the Sky roster looks like, how free agency and the draft is likely to change it.

One area he sounds very comfortable is at point guard, where he had this to say about the incumbent starting playmaker, Courtney Vandersloot.
“To me, and it’s no disrespect to the point guards in this league because I appreciate all the point guards, Sue Bird, Jasmine Thomas, you can go down the list. But I just feel like we have the best point guard in the league that was in Chicago last year.”
Wade also expressed a need to get someone he can play right away in his rotation with the fourth overall pick. That’s quite a significant role, since Wade sees this as a playoff team, and right away.
“They’re going to work hard every day,” Wade said. “I want them to see that success right away. . And I want them to own it and I’m going to own it. That’s what we want and we want to see the success right away.”
