2018 WNBA Draft Diary: Pick-by-pick updates, analysis, news
By Ben Dull
The Indiana Fever have selected Kelsey Mitchell of Ohio State with the second overall pick.
Mitchell is an explosive scoring guard with deep three-point range. Mitchell is a threat to orchestrate in the pick and roll, capable of getting to the rim or drilling a three-pointer off the bounce.
The sweet-shooting guard averaged 24.3 points and 4.2 assists per game as a senior for the Buckeyes. Whether she is working on or off the ball, Mitchell will open up the floor for head coach Pokey Chatman. She shot 40.2% from beyond the arc in 2017-2018 on nearly 10 attempts per game.
The Fever won just nine games last season, but expect their offense to keep them in games in 2018 when their shots are falling from the outside.
Few teams can put as much frontcourt shooting on the floor as the Fever. Candice Dupree is a high volume jump shooter from the midrange, as is newly acquired center Kayla Alexander. Erica Wheeler will be a nice piece in the backcourt to give the Fever 40 minutes of exciting point guard play or play alongside Mitchell as another threat to get to the rim.
