Williams and Carter get SEC weekly honors
For the second week in a row, the SEC player of the week award was given to a first time recipient of the award. This week it was Alabama’s Ashley Williams who took the honor home after a huge week for the Crimson Tide. The freshman of the week was Chennedy Carter of Texas A&M, marking the third time that the scoring dynamo has been honored.
Williams recording a double-double in both games was impressive enough, but doing so while leading her Crimson Tide team to yet another win over Tennessee took it to another level. The win over the Lady Vols was the fourth straight for Alabama but this time it was in Knoxville, a place they had never won before. The win also marked the first victory in 23 tries against AP Top 25 opponents. Williams scored 16 points, pulled down 10 boards and dished out 5 assists in the win, then followed that effort up with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Auburn. For the week, Williams averaged 16.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals.
The performances by Carter last week weren’t enough for the Aggies to go 2-0, but even in their lone loss to Mississippi State she was impactful. Her 31 points against the Bulldogs are the third-most points ever scored by an Aggie freshman in a game. Following that performance, she now finds herself in third place for most points scored in a season in Texas A&M history, behind just Jaynetta Saunders’ 2000-01 season and Danielle Adams’ 2010-11 season. Prior to the loss at State, Carter did help the Aggies take down Florida by scoring 28 points. For the week Carter averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals.
Alabama is now 17-10 (7-7, 8th place) and is likely to finish in 8th place. Texas A&M is 20-8 (9-5, 7th place) and could still finish in a variety of places in conference.
