SEC weekly honors are an all Bulldog affair

For the first time this season, the SEC weekly awards were swept by one team and it’s hard to argue with the choices. After leading their team to a win against Arkansas then picking up a gutsy overtime win at #16 Texas A&M, Georgia Bulldog senior Caliya Robinson was named player of the week while her teammate Gabby Connally was named freshman of the week. The two wins improved Georgia’s record to 16-2 (4-1) and a tie for second place in the SEC.

While taking down the Aggies on the road is impressive in and of itself, Robinson’s performance was remarkable. She scored 18 points while also hauling in 19 rebounds and blocking 8 shots. Her 19 rebounds were the second most by an SEC player this season and the sixth most in Georgia history. Her double-double 2 was her third straight and her 8 blocks are the most by an SEC player against a conference foe so far this season. Texas A&M wasn’t the only team that saw Robinson perform at a high level; she also scored 21 points against Arkansas earlier in the week. For the week, Robinson averaged 19.5 points per game, 15.5 rebounds per game and 6.5 blocks per game.

While Robinson’s numbers against Texas A&M pop off the page, it was the freshman Gabby Connally who really turned heads with her stat line. Coming off the bench, Connally, a San Antonio native, poured in 37 points to lead all scorers. The 37 points are the most in program history against a conference foe and the third most by a freshman, trailing only Coco Miller (45 vs. Charleston Southern in 1997) and Janet Harris (39 vs. Valdosta State in 1981). Even more impressive, perhaps, is that 15 of Connally’s 37 came in the five minute overtime period, outscoring Texas A&M 15-11 by herself. Earlier in the week, Connally scored 13 points against Arkansas, then a career high. After obliterating that record with her performance in College Station, Connally has helped lead the Bulldogs to seven straight road wins and the best record by a Georgia team since 1994-95 when Georgia went to the Final Four.
