PROVIDENCE, RI- Freshman guard Chanell Williams was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the first Friar since 2014 to get the award. /

With every new year comes changes and that truth is reflected in this week’s BIG EAST weekly honors. For the first time this season, Butler’s Tori Schickel and Providence’s Chanell Williams earned the Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards, respectively. Schickel helped her Bulldog squad to a massive upset while Williams also helped her squad achieve something it hadn’t in many years.

Player of the Week: Tori Schickel, Butler, Jr., F/C

With the always tough task of playing three games in a week, Schickel and her Butler teammates found a way to go 3-0 with one of those wins over then- No. 21 Villanova. It was Butler’s first win over a top-25 opponent since 1998 and Schickel was a huge factor. Against the Wildcats, Schickel scored 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting while also recording seven rebounds and six assists. As an encore, she then recorded a double-double against Georgetown with 28 points and 15 rebounds. With those two games, and a solid 12 points and nine rebounds performance against Seton Hall, Schickel averaged 22.0 points and 10.3 rebounds on the week.

Freshman of the Week: Chanell Williams, Providence, Fr., G

The first Freshman of the Week award for a Friar since March of 2014 when Sarah Beal got the honor, Williams scored 11.3 points on 50-percent shooting, plus had 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Her performance against St. John’s of 10 points and four assists helped Providence end a 14-game losing streak against the Red Storm, a streak that extended back 10 years. Williams also had 16 points and six rebounds in a losing effort against Seton Hall.
